UKChO score boundaries

UK Chemistry Olympiad Gold, Silver and Bronze thresholds change every year. Compare a mark only with the boundary for the same paper and distinguish official national figures from any provider’s internal student outcomes.

On the 84-mark 2026 paper, Gold began at 38, Silver at 23 and Bronze at 13. More than 70% of submitted scores received an award.

The table uses official RSC results reports. Ranges are inclusive; a plus sign means the award begins at that mark and continues to the maximum available that year.

Interpretation rule. Do not average these thresholds into a target score. Paper difficulty and cohort performance vary substantially.

Participation rose from 8,668 submitted scores in 2022 to 17,241 in 2026. That growth is important context, but it does not explain a boundary by itself: the paper’s accessibility and the distribution of all submitted marks remain central.

The contrast between 2025 and 2026 is especially useful. Gold moved from 29 on an 83-mark paper to 38 on an 84-mark paper, while the Gold share remained close to eight percent. The raw threshold changed much more than the broad award proportion.

Why do the boundaries move?

Difficulty changes

A paper with more accessible early parts can push boundaries upward. A technically demanding paper can produce lower thresholds without reducing the value of the award.

COHORT

Performance changes

The number and preparation of participating students influence the distribution. The RSC reviews submitted scores after the sitting.

MODERATION

High scores are checked

For the UK route, the RSC may request particularly high-scoring scripts. Award thresholds and later-stage selection are separate decisions.

For students

How to use a boundary without distorting practice

After a timed paper
Mark the paper using the official scheme, then compare the result with the same year’s boundary. Keep both the raw mark and award band in your record.
Across different years
Track the percentage of accessible marks you converted and the type of errors you made. A simple raw-score trend can be misleading when paper totals and difficulty change.
Before the real exam
Use historical bands as context, not a promise. Set process goals: attempt every accessible part, preserve units, show working and leave time to check structures.
After official results
Use the organiser’s published boundary. Do not infer an award from an unofficial screenshot, a provider’s mock grade or a threshold from another regional programme.

Common interpretation errors

What score-boundary tables cannot tell you

They do not predict a future award
A future paper can have a different total, topic balance and score distribution. Historical thresholds provide context only after a student has marked the corresponding historical paper.
They do not measure improvement alone
Moving from 25 on one paper to 30 on another may reflect easier questions rather than stronger chemistry. Compare error types, attempted marks and the same-year award band.
They do not create a fixed percentile
Gold has often represented roughly the highest eight percent of submitted scores, but the organiser publishes the actual result for each cycle. Do not convert a mark to a percentile without the distribution.
They do not prove course effectiveness
A provider’s award counts omit important context unless cohort size, prior attainment, service exposure and verification method are disclosed. Counts should not be presented as a causal success rate.
They do not decide Round Two
Gold boundaries classify Round One awards. The RSC separately invites a small number of eligible high scorers to the next selection stage.

For a useful practice record, save the year, raw mark, paper total, award band, unanswered marks and three most frequent error causes. That record remains informative even when boundaries move.
