Competition Support

The UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO) does not have a formal syllabus. However, students who have studied A-Level Chemistry (or an equivalent qualification) should be prepared to attempt the questions.

The problems are challenging, requiring students to apply their knowledge, solve problems, and make reasoned predictions. The key is not to give up—even seemingly low scores can earn awards. For example, in 2021, a student only needed 17 points out of 85 to receive a Bronze medal.

We always encourage students to read carefully so they do not miss any attemptable questions, and to attempt all multiple-choice questions.

Exam Resources

All UKChO papers include:

  • The periodic table of elements

  • A list of useful constants and quantities

These resources are typically provided at the end of the exam paper, so students can refer to them as needed while answering questions.
