Competition Rules

1. UKChO Rules

  • Language: English

  • Format: Individual test

  • Question Type: 5–6 analytical questions, each containing 3–10 sub-questions

  • Difficulty: High. UKChO serves as the selection for the UK Chemistry National Team. The competition is rigorous, prestigious, and highly recognized.

  • Content: Covers topics from A-Level to first-year university, with organic chemistry topics exceeding standard high school international curricula.

  • Location: Partner schools, paper-based exam

  • Scoring: All papers are sent to the UK for marking by RSC-appointed examiners

  • Awards:

    • Gold 🏆: 7–8%

    • Silver 🥈: 32–33%

    • Bronze 🥉: 57–58%

    Award thresholds are set based on UK students’ performance. Typically, 60–65% of UK participants receive at least a Bronze certificate, and the top 7–8% earn Gold. Chinese participants are awarded according to these thresholds. In 2021, nearly 14% of Chinese students earned Gold, over 17% earned Silver, and more than 26% earned Bronze.

  • Fees: Include exam, supervision, marking, and certificates for previous years’ papers. (ASDAN does not provide any training.)


2. UKChO Exam Structure

  • Total Marks: Varies slightly each year, usually 80–90 points

  • Duration: 2 hours

  • Question Format: Approximately 5 analytical, short-answer questions, each with 3–10 sub-questions

  • Notes: As all questions are short-answer, the exam tests both English proficiency and logical reasoning skills.
