Competition Overview

This page provides detailed information on the UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO), including its introduction, competition process, award structure, and prestige.

1. About the UKChO

The UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO) is organized by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), one of the world’s most influential chemistry organizations, headquartered in London and Cambridge.

Guided by the RSC, a 175-year-old non-profit organization, UKChO has become the longest-running, most academically prestigious, and highly influential high school chemistry competition in the UK. Its goal is to provide outstanding high school students with an extension of their classroom chemistry studies, nurturing chemical thinking and problem-solving skills in preparation for university-level scientific learning and research.

In 2018, UKChO was officially introduced in China, offering Chinese students more opportunities for academic development in chemistry and a platform to compete alongside UK students for global Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards.

2. Competition Process

Round One: Written Exam

  • Date: January 2024

  • Format: Written exam, open to students worldwide

  • Location: UKChO partner schools worldwide

  • Purpose: Assess students’ chemistry knowledge through real-world chemical problems

Special Note:
Chinese students may only participate in Round One, taking the same exam as UK students. Before the test, organizers send the exam papers and marking schemes to participating teachers via email.

Scoring: Papers are marked by the RSC committee, and the top 30 UK students advance to Round Two.

Round Two: Training Camp

  • Date: Late March – Early April

  • Eligibility: UK students only

  • Location: University of Cambridge, including short-term accommodation and training

  • Details: Up to 30 top scorers from Round One receive advanced instruction from leading scholars and technical experts. This round identifies four students to represent the UK at the IChO.

Round Three: International Competition

  • Date: July

  • Location: UK Training Camp + International Chemistry Olympiad

  • Details: After intensive training, the selected students compete at the International Chemistry Olympiad, aiming for Gold medals.

3. Award Structure

UKChO awards are distributed as follows:

  • Gold 🏆: Top 7–8%

  • Silver 🥈: Top 32–33%

  • Bronze 🥉: Top 57–58%

Global awards are structured to avoid affecting UK students’ award proportions or competition logistics. After setting the thresholds based on UK students’ results, Chinese students’ awards are assigned according to the same standards.

4. Prestige and Significance of UKChO

  • Academic Depth:
UKChO questions are flexible and in-depth, designed to reinforce and extend classroom chemistry knowledge. All questions are analytical and open-ended, requiring students to apply their knowledge creatively to solve real chemical problems.

  • Boosts University Applications:
Strong performance in UKChO demonstrates academic excellence and significantly enhances applications to Oxford, Cambridge, the UK G5 universities, and other top global institutions, particularly for chemistry, medicine, and related fields.

    • Cambridge University explicitly emphasizes the importance of UKChO on its website, encouraging students to participate and strengthen their chemical thinking skills.

  • Global Influence:
UKChO is celebrated worldwide, with nearly 30,000 students participating annually. In China alone, over 250 top international and A-Level high schools participate, including Shenzhen International Academy and Shanghai Guanghua Cambridge, competing for global awards.
