Eligibility and registration
Who can enter and how?
Who can enter the UK Chemistry Olympiad?
For the RSC route, Round One is open to institutions teaching students aged 16–19 in the British Isles; certificates can be issued to students aged 19 and under. Regional routes set their own school-status and nationality conditions. A student should ask the entering institution to confirm eligibility for the current cycle.
Can a student register individually?
Normally no. RSC entries are managed by schools or colleges. The published ASEEDER China route also uses partner schools or authorised institutions rather than direct individual registration.
Can students outside the UK take part?
Some overseas schools and regional programmes offer Round One participation, but eligibility and administration vary. Taking the paper or receiving a Round One award does not automatically make a student eligible for Round Two or selection to the UK team.
When does registration open for 2027?
No confirmed 2027 registration window was shown on the official pages reviewed on 13 July 2026. Treat dates in internal planning notes as provisional until the RSC or regional administrator publishes the cycle.

Format, difficulty and equipment
How long is Round One?
Two hours in one supervised sitting. The 2026 paper contained five questions and 84 marks. Question count and total marks can change, so use the paper for the relevant year.
Is there a UKChO syllabus?
The RSC does not publish a closed syllabus. A-Level chemistry or an equivalent advanced secondary course provides the foundation, but questions deliberately introduce unfamiliar information and can extend beyond standard classroom treatments.
Can students use a calculator?
The ASEEDER regional FAQ allows a basic calculator without equation-editor or programming functions. Students entering through the RSC route should follow the current equipment instructions issued to their school rather than assuming a regional rule applies.
Can students use a dictionary?
The China regional FAQ permits a printed dictionary. Electronic dictionaries or translation devices should not be assumed permitted. The invigilator’s instructions for the specific route are authoritative.
How difficult is UKChO?
It is intentionally demanding. Students must combine advanced school chemistry with new information, multi-stage calculations and clear written reasoning. A low raw mark can still earn an award because boundaries reflect the actual paper and cohort.

How are results interpreted?
How are Gold, Silver and Bronze boundaries set?
The RSC reviews the submitted Round One score distribution and publishes year-specific thresholds. In 2026, Gold began at 38, Silver at 23 and Bronze at 13 out of 84. Those marks should not be reused for another year.
Is a score below 50% a poor result?
Not necessarily. UKChO papers are designed to stretch strong students. In 2026, 38 out of 84 was sufficient for Gold. Judge a score against the same paper’s official boundary and examine which marks were accessible.
How do students receive their score and certificate?
For the RSC route, students request scores from their teacher and certificates are distributed to schools. Regional routes may use a different results portal or institutional process.
Does a Gold award qualify a student for Round Two?
No automatic rule should be inferred. The RSC invites a small group of the highest-achieving eligible UK participants to Round Two. Regional award recipients are not automatically part of the UK selection pathway.
Preparation and support
How should a student prepare?
Where can I find official past papers?
RSC Education publishes papers and mark schemes from 2003 onwards. Recent sets also include supporting materials, answer booklets and examiner reports. Use our past-papers guide for direct links to recent files.
What is the best past-paper method?
Attempt a paper for two hours, mark it using the official scheme, classify every lost mark, repair one weakness and then test the change on a different paper. Repeated untimed reading is less useful than a documented attempt-and-review cycle.
Are preparation courses part of the RSC competition?
No. Preparation courses on this site are an independent programme. The RSC organises the competition; ASEEDER administers a regional route. Course participation does not guarantee entry, an award or later-stage selection.
Are accessible paper formats available?
Schools should contact the organiser or regional administrator before the deadline to discuss current accessibility arrangements. Do not assume that a past accommodation will be available without confirmation.
What refund rule applies?
Refund terms belong to the administrator that receives payment. The ASEEDER 2026 FAQ described a deduction before the deadline and no refund after it, but a future cycle can change. Read the current terms before paying.
