UKChO 2027 registration opens on 16 September 2026 — and from that day forward there are two calendars in play, not one. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s published schedule puts Round 1 on Thursday 21 January 2027 with registration closing 11 January. The China-region sitting, per the organising channel’s date-change notice, now runs Friday 22 January 2027, with the channel’s registration deadline set at 11 January — the same day the RSC portal closes. The channel’s earlier notices described an evening, computer-based session; confirm the exact timing at booking. Neither date corrects the other. They are two separately administered sittings of the same competition, and the most common way students lose their entry is by planning against the wrong one.
The two calendars, side by side
Here is the full picture. The left column is what the RSC publishes for UK-based schools; the right column is what the China-region organising channel has circulated for candidates entering through it. Sources are labelled because they matter: if you are entering through your own school as a registered centre, the RSC calendar governs you; if you are entering through the China-region route, the channel’s calendar governs you — and you should confirm every date with your entry channel at booking.

Why the dates differ, and why that is normal
International sittings of UK competitions routinely run on their own logistics. The RSC’s own guidance describes a registration route for international schools in a list of territories that includes China, administered separately with fees applying — we covered that route in our ladder guide from Round 1 to the international stage. A separately administered sitting means separately arranged dates, venues and formats: the UK paper is a written test sat in schools; the China sitting we have been given is an evening, computer-based session. The same thing happens across competitions — the AMC’s US dates and China test-centre dates differ, and the BBO’s UK window and China date differ. Treat the divergence as administrative fact, not as an error to resolve.
The practical consequence, after the date-change notice, is actually simpler than before: both routes now close on 11 January 2027, so there is exactly one deadline to remember — but the sittings remain a day apart, Thursday 21 January at UK centres and Friday 22 January in the China region. The deadline confusion is gone; the exam-day question remains. Check which route you are on first, and everything else follows from that.
What to do between now and January
Registration opening on 16 September is the starting gun, and the runway to late January is about nineteen weeks. Here is the sequence we recommend, whichever calendar governs you:

On content: the 2026 boundaries tell you where the bar sits. Gold moved to 38 out of 84 — we analysed why in the gold-boundary piece — and the field is increasingly a Year 12 competition, which changes what “on pace” means for younger candidates (see the 2026 field analysis). If you are building a study plan from scratch, start with energetics and organic mechanisms: they carry the densest mark concentration on recent papers, and our thermodynamics drill is designed to fit exactly this autumn window. Boundaries move year to year, so treat 38 as last season’s reference, not a promise.
Entry routes for China-based candidates
If your school is a registered UKChO centre, enter through your school — that is the simplest route, and your school’s exams officer handles registration against the RSC deadline. If your school is not a centre, the China-region route exists precisely for you: entry is arranged through the organising channel, closing 11 January per its date-change notice — the same day as the RSC portal — with the sitting on 22 January. Fees apply on the international route per RSC guidance. Whichever route you take, the paper tests the same chemistry — the skill of doing chemistry on unfamiliar substances — so the preparation does not change, only the logistics do.
Frequently asked questions
Which UKChO 2027 date applies to me — 21 January or 22 January?
It depends on your entry route. Students entering through a UK school centre sit the written test on Thursday 21 January 2027, per the RSC. Candidates entering through the China-region organising channel sit on Friday 22 January 2027, per the channel’s date-change notice — an evening, computer-based session per its earlier notices. Confirm your date and timing with your entry channel at booking; do not plan against the other route’s calendar.
When does UKChO 2027 registration open and close?
The RSC registration window runs 16 September 2026 to 11 January 2027 for schools registering directly. The China-region channel’s deadline is also 11 January 2027, per its date-change notice — so both routes close on the same day, and 11 January is the one date every candidate should treat as final.
Is the China sitting the same exam as the UK sitting?
It is the same competition administered separately: the UK version is a written paper sat in schools, while the China-region sitting is scheduled as an evening computer-based session at arranged venues. The chemistry tested is the same, so preparation is identical. Administrative details of the China sitting should be confirmed with the organising channel.
What about Round 2?
The RSC lists Round 2 and training-camp details for 2027 as to be confirmed. Based on recent seasons, roughly 25 to 30 students from the whole field advance, and marking of Round 1 runs to 7 February. Watch rsc.org for the confirmed arrangements.

UK-schools dates are as published by the RSC at edu.rsc.org (checked September 2026); China-sitting details are as circulated by the regional organising channel and should be confirmed at booking.
